Every Monday morning I show up bright and early (9:20am), dressed to impress and cheery as can be (sweaty running clothes and slightly groggy) to do the Monday Folders for Isabelle’s class at school. It is my job to stuff the childrens’ folders with approximately 217 papers each…sign-ups for the school play, classroom weekly newsletter, PTA reminders, and the like.
This is a great gig because for 30 short minutes I can monitor Isabelle’s behavior, get a read on her social skills, shoot the occasional evil eye at the classroom bully and eavesdrop on the teacher.
Yesterday, for the first time, I took the toddler.
Yesterday was not a great gig.
I thought surely Jack would sit in the reading corner, happy to experience a bean bag for the first time, read a book and watch the students. He did! For about three minutes, until he spotted Isabelle. Evidently, Jack did not understand this is where his big sister disappears to every day.
“Sis!” he shouted happily, and ran to her desk. He wanted to sit on her lap, explore the wonders of her (messy) desk and chill with the boys on either side of her.
Pretending to be invisible—which I was not...all 24 kids were highly amused—I patiently dragged him back to the beanbag and plopped several engaging books in his lap.
Jack again escaped to her desk, I pulled him away, got 2 papers inserted into folders, Jack escaped again, I pulled him back…you get the picture.
Finally, he pretended to just stay on the beanbag. Until I turned my back and was lulled into complacency, stuffing maybe a grand total of 3 folders. Then he quietly got off the beanbag, sneaked around behind me THE LONG WAY, behind the teacher’s desk, and then ran full speed to Isabelle—watched by 24 children with bated breath.
“Sis!” he called, “Hewwp!” (help) The class erupted in laughter—of the Little Rascals variety. (someone please tell me you know what I mean by that.)
Meanwhile, I was DRESSED IN LAYERS. And I had forgotten that the school keeps the thermostat at what surely must be 940 degrees. We were providing quite the entertainment—and I was getting sweatier by the moment. Steam was coming off my head, from heat and toddler-induced grizzlement.
Somehow all the folders got stuffed, while I was trying unsuccessfully to stifle my exasperation, and I sped over to the cubbies to throw all the folders into the kids’ respective slots and get the crap out of there.
It was at this point that Jack discovered the recess bin. The bin that holds all the 4-square balls. The balls that bounce really high. And make a loud, echo-y “BOING!” noise.
“BOING!”
“BOING!”
“BOING!”
“BOING!”
“BOING!”
“BOING!”
Seriously, no less than six balls were sent bouncing in quick succession all over the classroom like pinballs. With ensuing Little Rascals laughter.
I tossed the few remaining folders on the teacher’s desk and got the heck out of there. Straight to McDonald’s, where Jack got an ice cream (don’t judge my negative reinforcement) and I downed a XL Diet Coke in 37 seconds flat.
And my final thought is this: Good thing Isabelle's class had a substitute that day.

SO funny and Jack is way cute....
I only agreed to help with PE for that exact reason! If I have to take the kids---who's gonna notice them with 22 2nd graders running around!
LOL. Crystal you described the scene perfectly. I think this should be your next book.... :)
Thanks for a fun time yesterday. Soo needed. ;)

i bet the class cannot wait until he comes to volunteer next week!
HAAAAAA! Good times! Good times! xoxo
wow! jack is getting so big!
you must be in utah, cause i really don't know any school that would even ALLOW toddlers in the classroom. talk about family friendly.
Oh man. This brings back not so fond memories for me. Good thing there was a sub!
Oh, I feel your pain! You described what happens to me every time I go and do a party for the kids class. I refuse to help out during class time because I know I have no one to take my boy and it would be like this every time. I've tried. So instead, I have the teachers hate me because I just flat out tell them no. It looks like you remedied the situation perfectly. In my world it would have been a Dr.Pepper.
Welcome back to the blogging world. It's stories like this one (although very funny when it's not happening to you) that make me glad I cannot bring my other children in when helping in the classroom.
What a great ending to your story! The substitute probably appreciated the entertainment and time killing aspects of your visit.
Every time I have ever helped at the elementary school it has been a sweaty affair. It is HOT in there!
That was such a funny story..I know not for you at the time. Jack is soo cute and big it makes me sad I haven't seen you guys in awhile
Oh Crystal...this was hilarious and so well told I felt like I was a fly on the wall in 4th grade.
Hooray for substitutes!! And I'm sure the kids loved having you and Jack there.
I don't think I could have survived the HEAT. Ugh!
I love it! I have had that experience many times! Hey I say that if they want my help then the "shadow" (what ever baby is still at home) comes with me!!
This is great. Probably the highlight of the day for all those there. I think it is great you are going in to help and I love that you bring the toddler.
Oh my gosh!! I love this story!!!
Sister- I have been there & I feel your pain. Still- that little guy is so stinkin cute :)
Hey- the legislature could fund the whole state if they would turn the blankety blank heat down in the schools- I nearly burn up everytime I go into a public school- what's up with that??
and hooray for diet coke
and mcdonalds
and substitutes :)
you probably own this already, but just in case you don't, I think you probably need this:

Thanks for having my back with my VT companion! I have respectfully requested a new partner. I hate being a bother to the RS but since one of the counselors VT me, I told her the situation and hopefully by next month I will have someone new. Have a really great week!
