This past Tuesday was the (drum roll...) Pinewood Derby. Max has been eagerly anticipating this event, and it did not disappoint.
Here is the car in conception phase. Can you see the pencil outline on the wood? Max told Mike that he wanted a car that looked like Lightnin' McQueen from "Cars."After much sanding...the car emerges.
First coat of paint.
And here it is after the "body work," as Mike put it, is finished. You can't tell from this photo, but Max put a really cool black sheen over the 1st coat of red paint, so it kinda has this two-tone thing going on. I had NO IDEA boys (ages 8 and 37) would take this so seriously.
Here are all the competitors lined up. I thought this was a really cute photo of all the different cars.
Here is Max by the starting line, ready to race.
A little lineup of avid cheerleaders. The sisters took the races JUST as seriously as their brothers.Max's game face. (I think the little boy next to him is getting lectured for tampering with equipment; so funny!)
After winning the first heat.
Third place overall! Sweet!

congratulations, max! [and mike]. nice story of the pinewood derby. i can't believe these professional-looking cars! i had no idea.
Oh...the misery that is cub scouts. I am keeping Payton at 7 years old for the rest of his life so I will not have to endure the agony that is scouts.
I have threatened Payton not to bring any pinewood derby cars home, take them straight to Uncle Craig, do not pass go, do not collect $200.
Michael and I are well, I wouldn't say we were anti-scouts, but we can think of, I don't know, about 2 million things I would rather do, and on that is list is chopping off a body limb... well, maybe just the fat!!:)
Cute pics though, congrats to Max and Mike.
Scouts is definitely a whole new world of parenting. Another *&%^$#@(*$#! thing to TRACK. I'm trying (& usually failing) to have a good attitude.
So cute. After coming from a family of all girls, I'm excited to see all of the Scout things. Boys are so fun.
Ok, Wendi. Quit putting me to shame with your good attitude!
Thanks for sharing the boy world with me. I like hearing about it.
It looks fun but since I don't have any boys I can have a good attitude.
